October Caddis Soft Hackle (pic attached)
This Soft Hackle pattern, swung or dead-drifted, represents this large Caddis pupa, or emerger, or drowned adult. It's been far more effective than October Caddis Dry fly patterns in late Sep through Oct. This fly is a 'must have' for our Upper Sac trip.
Hook - TMC 200R, size 8
Thread - orange, 140 denier
Abdomen - Polar Chenille, amber (trimmed, given a buzz cut)
Thorax - several extra wraps of the amber polar chenille, creating a small bulge
Wing - Gadwall or Mallard, dyed Woodduck or Tan, extending beyond the hook bend
Hackles - Mallard, 2 wraps in front of the wing, dyed orange, tips extending to the hook bend, then orange hen or Schlappen, 2 turns and then build head of thread.
