Monday Night Flytying at The Pond

Stonefly Nymph. This fly is an adaptation of a fly that a friend gave to me years ago when we were fishing on the Piedra River in Colorado. I never knew the name of that original pattern, or even if there was one, so I don't really have a name for this fly. With the Skwala Stonefly hatch on the Yuba just around the corner, I thought January was a good month for this fly.

I tie this fly in a lot of sizes and a couple of different colors, depending on which stonefly I'm trying to imitate. I will also include some orange highlights if I'm trying to imitate a Salmonfly. I almost always tie it weighted, and use this as the weight in my nymphing rig to get the flies on/near the bottom.

Recipe:

Hook: A long curve shanked/heavy wire nymphing hook such as a Daiichi 051760. However a straight shank is good too, such as a TMC 5263. Sizes 4-12.

Thread: Black or Brown 6/0 or 140 denier thread

Dubbing: Kaufman's Black or Brown stonefly dubbing

Legs and tails: Brown or Black goose biots
