Fly Tying with Larry Lack

The next Fly Tying session is this coming Monday, September 18th at 6pm at Pond Farm Brewing in San Rafael. Larry Lack will be our instructor, and he will be demonstrating the Backflop Jig. This is a pattern that was developed by Devin Olsen, and is a very effective Sculpin imitation that is best fished using Euro Nymphing techniques. I highly recommend you watch this video before the session.

Here is a recipe for the fly:

Hook: Tiemco 403BLJ or Umpqua XC400 in sizes 8-12

Bead: Slotted Tungsten bead sized to hook (silver)

Weight: Lead or Lead free wire sized to hook

Thread: 8/0 or 6/0 uni thread (black, brown or olive)

Tail: Pine Squirrel (black, olive, brown or natural)

Body: Pine Squirrel (same colors), and medium UV Polar Chenille wrapped together

Hackle: India Hen or other hen saddle hackle.

Dubbing Collar: Ice dub (color dependent on preferences and body colors)
